Chattogram, September 28, 2026 (BSS) — The Chattogram Customs, Excise and VAT Commissionerate collected Tk 1,843.588 billion from VAT, excise, supplementary duty and penalties in FY2025-26, an increase of 11.07% over the previous fiscal year.
The commissionerate collected Tk 1,663.787 billion in FY2024-25, meaning revenue rose by Tk 179.802 billion in a year. Growth is mainly attributed to stricter monitoring of high-risk firms, onboarding of new businesses into the VAT net, and strengthened online administration.
The commissionerate set a collection target of Tk 2,279.537 billion for FY2025-26; the shortfall against actual collection was Tk 435.949 billion, or 19.12%.
"Although we missed the target, we still ensured growth — and that matters. The shortfall was due to an overall decline in business volume, especially in imports and exports," said Commissioner Sheikh Abu Faisal Mohamed Murad.
Monthly trend: July collected Tk 170.278 billion, up 6.30% YoY but Tk 30.020 billion short of target; August Tk 128.553 billion, slowing to 0.94% growth, Tk 31.346 billion short; September reversed the trend with Tk 178.521 billion, up 27.16% YoY — Tk 38.134 billion higher than a year earlier and Tk 2.453 billion above the monthly target.
Thereafter, October brought Tk 141.377 billion, November Tk 138.984 billion, December Tk 175.293 billion, January Tk 141.582 billion and February Tk 144.159 billion.
In March, collections fell to Tk 126.040 billion, down Tk 14.846 billion or 10.54% YoY and Tk 78.287 billion short of the monthly target. April and May rebounded to Tk 168.482 billion and Tk 141.373 billion respectively; June collected Tk 188.947 billion, up 19.52% YoY.
Commissioner Murad said the tax net has widened as new firms joined the VAT network and supervision against evasion intensified. Through risk management and profiling, high-risk and large enterprises have been identified and their transactions and VAT returns closely monitored.
He added that the commissionerate also stepped up monitoring of government bodies, autonomous organizations and NGOs to secure VAT, and is running special operations to detect evasion and recover long-overdue dues.
